Gelibolu – Gallipoli
If all is well with the world, my next port of call would be Gelibolu, know to us as Gallipoli, where my grandfather fought as a young 18 – 19 year old in the first World War with the ANZAC troops but that was not where he was gassed and wounded.
According to Turkish Archaeological News, the Ottomans seized the town from the Greeks in 1354 after the Greeks had deserted the town following an earthquake.
I realise that this video evokes nostalgic memories of Nicosia.
Always in trouble with Mother Victoria in St. Joseph’s Convent which I attended from 11 – 13. I was constantly sent out of the classroom to stand in the sun to repent my sins. Poor lady! So I would walk home, rather risky considering that EOKA was in action. But as long as I got home at a time to match the arrival of the school bus, my misdemeanour could remain undetected. And wandering the city streets was indeed liberating, particularly having been confined in a Belgian convent for 2 years!
I found this Facebook link in which other girls remembers their time there.
